Cardinal and Chickadee on a Safflower Cylinder

Are Starlings taking over your feeders? We can help!

As beautiful as these birds can be, in large numbers they can overwhelm your feeders, depleting your seed and scaring off the smaller birds. But thankfully, there are some simple & effective solutions!

Safflower has long been used to attract many feeder favourites, like Chickadees, Cardinals, and this sweet little siskin, while discouraging the larger birds like Blackbirds and Grackles. Squirrels also tend to not like it, which is an added bonus for many to try adding a safflower station to their offerings!

Though traditionally white safflower has been used, and many people still use it to great effect, there is another option available as well! We're pleased to now offer our Nutrasaff™ Golden Safflower. Both are available in loose seed or seed cylinders.

Why NutraSaff™ Golden Safflower?

NutraSaff™ has an extremely thin outer hull - 40% thinner than traditional safflower. It also has more oil, higher protein, and higher fat, all of which make it a more fullfilling and nutritious seed for your feathered friends! Studies have shown birds prefer NutraSaff™ 2-1 over traditional safflower.

NutraSaff™ (available in 5, 10 and 20lb bags) can be offered in a hopper, platform/tray or tube feeders, and it is especially helpful for window or deck feeders where blackbirds or squirrels may be a problem. NutraSaff™ can be offered as a single seed type or by gradually, mixing it with the seed blends you currently provide.

There's no question that when it comes to feeding backyard birds, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Birds have their own thoughts and preferences, so what works in our yard won't always work everywhere else! Our entire time tested Golden Safflower with our backyard birds and have happily added it to our favourite food-offerings along with our usual stock of our store seed blends and treats like bark butter. Inspired by this success, we decided to start offering golden safflower to hopefully help more people find solutions to grackles and blackbirds and squirrels while still getting the birds they want to see!

Whether you are using the golden Nutrasaff™, or the white safflower, the loose seed can be offered in hopper, tray, or tube feeders, and it is especially helpful for window or deck feeders where blackbirds or squirrels may be a problem. Safflower can be offered as a single seed type or by gradually, mixing it with the seed blends you currently provide.

Love our other seed blends, but don't want the blackbirds?

Safflower is a great option, but not everyone wants to change what they're feeding. Or maybe you want one station that's really designed for the sweet little songbirds, where you can use one of our amazing No-mess blends that they all love.

If this sounds like what you're looking for, a cage might be a perfect option! Our Tube Feeder Cover is designed to protect tube feeders. With 1.5" openings, it's perfect to let the little birds in, while keeping the larger birds (and the bigger squirrels) out! We also have the Seed Cylinder Cage, which allows you to protect any size of our cylinders from the blackbirds, starlings, grackles, and large squirrels!

Eliminate them... with our Eliminator!

Our Eliminator feeder is another great option. Not only does it protect your bird seed bounty from squirrels it also has a unique technology which allows you to adjust the sensitivity level, so you can also exclude large birds as well such as grackles. You can also easily remove the perching ring or even the perches to only allow those smaller, clinging birds (such as chickadee, goldfinch, nuthatch and woodpeckers!). The Eliminator feeder does it all which is why it's our best-selling feeder! It is also backed by a lifetime warranty!

Consider adding a Finch Feeder to your feeding station!

Our WBU EcoClean® and Quick-Clean® Finch Feeders are designed specifically for finches and for finch food. Finch Tube Feeders differ from seed tube feeders in that the holes are small enough to accommodate finch beaks, preventing other larger birds (such as Grackles, Red-wing Blackbirds and Starlings) as well as chipmunks and squirrels from feeding. Our WBU Finch Feeders accommodate Nyjer® seed and our Finch Blend. Not only do Finch Feeders attract American Goldfinch, they also invite many other beautiful songbirds, such as Purple Finch, Black-capped Chickadee, Nuthatches & Downy Woodpeckers, to name a few!
